Patrick Mahomes Sr. pleads guilty in Texas to third or more drunken driving charge

The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of driving while intoxicated for the third time or more, records show.
The plea comes after Patrick Mahomes Sr., a 54-year-old former Texas Rangers pitcher, was arrested in February in Tyler on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The arrest occurred just over a week before his son played in the Super Bowl.
“Today, Mr. Mahomes entered a guilty plea in his case pursuant to a written plea agreement,” attorney Joseph Murphy wrote in a statement to The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday. “Our client is now living a sober life, and we believe that the he steps he has taken to better his life helped us achieve a plea recommendation for probation.”
Mahomes Sr. is scheduled to to be sentenced in a hearing in the 7th District Court on Sept. 23.

In Texas, a DWI third or subsequent offense is a third-degree felony and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Mahomes Sr. was arrested on Feb. 3 in the 1100 block of West Gentry Parkway in Tyler on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to a Smith County arrest warrant affidavit. He had an open beer can in the car and said he had been drinking, according to the affidavit.
Smith County records show Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to a DWI charge in 2018 and was sentenced to 40 days in jail. Police said he was also convicted of a DWI in South Dakota in 2008, according to his February affidavit.
Mahomes Sr., in addition to playing for the Rangers, formerly played baseball for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.
